An Intimate, Boutique Safari Experience in Zuka Private Game Reserve

Tucked away in the unspoiled wilderness of northern KwaZulu-Natal, Sungulwane Lodge is a private, family-owned, intimate safari lodge set within the exclusive Zuka Private Game Reserve, a secluded corner of the greater Munyawana Conservancy. Bordering the iconic Phinda Private Game Reserve and nestled within the lush heart of Zululand, this boutique retreat offers a front-row seat to one of South Africa’s most biodiverse and captivating safari regions.

Sungulwane is a place where luxury meets authenticity. With just 8 private suites, accommodating a maximum of 20 guests, the lodge guarantees a peaceful and personal experience. Each suite is thoughtfully positioned to maximise panoramic views of the reserve and designed with an organic aesthetic that reflects the surrounding landscape. Guests enjoy both indoor and outdoor showers, expansive private decks, and interiors that invite you to reconnect with nature in comfort and style.

The Zuka Private Game Reserve, where Sungulwane is located, forms part of a vast conservation area that borders Phinda. Home to the Big Five, cheetah, hyena, abundant plains game, and over 400 species of birdlife, the reserve offers exceptional biodiversity. What sets Zuka apart is its low vehicle density, providing uncrowded game viewing and the rare privilege of observing wildlife in near solitude.

Twice-daily game drives are led by Sungulwane’s experienced and passionate guides, whose deep knowledge of the land and conservation shines through in every sighting. Mornings begin with coffee and anticipation as the bush awakens, while evening drives culminate in sundowners overlooking the wild expanse, followed by a night drive under the stars.

Back at the lodge, guests can relax in the infinity pool, dine under the canopy of ancient red ivory trees, or simply soak in the rhythms of the bush from the comfort of their private deck. With a strong focus on sustainability, warm Zululand hospitality, and tailor-made experiences, Sungulwane is more than a safari lodge—it’s a soulful journey into the wild.

Children at Sungulwane Lodge
At Sungulwane Private Game Lodge, we welcome children of all ages and love sharing the wonders of the bush with young explorers. As a family-friendly camp, we aim to create memorable experiences while ensuring safety and comfort for all our guests.

Please note:
• The lodge is unfenced, and the communal pool is uncovered and unmanned – therefore, children must be under adult supervision at all times.
• Children 3 years and under are not permitted on game drives due to safety regulations. Child-minding services are available by prior arrangement at a rate of R190.00 per hour.
• Children aged 4–6 years are welcome at the lodge but may only join game drives if an exclusive-use vehicle is booked, and they may not approach Big Five sightings.
• Children over 6 years old may join scheduled game drives; however, should circumstances require (e.g., presence of other guests or safety concerns), management or guides may request that an exclusive vehicle be arranged.
• The conservation levy is payable by all guests, including children of all ages (2025 rate: R190.00 per person per night).

Children’s Rates:
• Children 0-2 years old are free of charge.
• Children 3–12 years old pay 50% of the adult rate when sharing with two adults.
• Children 12 years and older pay the full adult rate.

We look forward to welcoming your whole family to Sungulwane—where the wild becomes a playground of discovery for young and old alike.

Expert Tips

Expert Tips for Your Sungulwane

Family-Friendly Adventure

Young explorers aged six and over are warmly welcomed—our chalets’ interleading doors and child-safe balustrades make Sungulwane a safe, memorable introduction to the African bush for kids and teens alike.

Timing Is Everything

Plan early-morning and late-afternoon game drives when wildlife is most active and the golden light is perfect for photography. Midday is best spent cooling off by your private deck’s plunge pool or indulging in a spa treatment.

Pack Smart

Layered, neutral–toned clothing will keep you comfortable through cool dawn drives and warming afternoons. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen to protect against the African sun.

Birdwatcher’s Bonus

The lodge lies in a bird-rich corridor—keep binoculars at the ready to spot kingfishers, hamerkops, and rare African skimmers dipping along the water’s edge.

Respect the Rhythm

Our Shangaan guides follow wildlife rather than strict timetables. Embrace flexibility—sometimes the best sightings happen when you linger a little longer at an unexpected waterhole.

Conservation in Action

Ask your guide about Sungulwane’s community and anti-poaching initiatives. Engaging with these programs deepens your safari experience and supports local conservation efforts.

Digital Detox

Wi-Fi is available in the main lodge, but we encourage you to unplug in your chalet. Savor uninterrupted moments on your deck as elephants amble by and starlight replaces screen light.
